Websites increasingly deliver images as AVIF because the files are small and load fast. That's great in a browser, but right-click and save one and you'll often end up with a file your editor, email client or printer can't handle.

Converting to JPG solves that. This converter opens the AVIF in your browser, redraws it at the same width and height, and saves a standard JPG that any device will open, with the quality level you choose.

AVIF vs JPG

What is AVIF?

AV1 Image File Format

.avif

AVIF stores a still image using the AV1 video codec, developed by the Alliance for Open Media, a group that includes Google, Netflix, Mozilla and Apple. The specification was published in 2019.

It compresses photos very efficiently, often producing a noticeably smaller file than JPG or WebP at the same visible quality, and it supports transparency and HDR color. The catch is support outside the browser: many editors, upload forms and older devices still can't open it.

What is JPG?

Joint Photographic Experts Group

.jpg, .jpeg

JPG, also written JPEG, has been the standard format for photos since the early 1990s. It uses lossy compression: it discards detail the eye is least likely to notice, which keeps photos small.

It is accepted almost everywhere, from cameras and phones to printers, email, websites and government upload forms. It has no transparency, and each time a JPG is edited and saved again it loses a little more detail.

Reasons to convert

Why Convert AVIF to JPG?

Universal compatibility

Older versions of Windows and macOS, many photo editors, and a lot of online forms don't recognize AVIF at all. Everything recognizes JPG.

Easy to print and share

Print shops, email attachments and messaging apps handle JPG without surprises, so the image looks the same for whoever receives it.

Ready to edit

Open the JPG in any editor, from Paint to Photoshop, without plugins or extra codecs.

Accepted by upload forms

Job portals, exam registrations and visa applications often ask specifically for JPG. Converting first avoids a rejected upload.

Tips for Converting AVIF to JPG

Frequently asked questions

Is AVIF better than JPG?

For file size, usually yes: an AVIF is often much smaller than a JPG that looks the same. For compatibility, no. JPG opens almost everywhere, while AVIF still isn't supported by many apps and upload forms. Convert when you need the file to work, not to look better.

Will converting AVIF to JPG reduce quality?

JPG is lossy, so a small amount of detail is always lost. At the default 90% quality it is very hard to see. Raise the slider for more detail, or lower it if a smaller file matters more.

What happens to a transparent background?

JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a solid color. White is the default, and you can pick black or any other color. To keep transparency, convert to PNG or WebP instead.

Why is the JPG bigger than my AVIF?

AVIF is a newer format with much more efficient compression, so the same picture takes more space as a JPG. Lower the quality slider to reduce the size.

Does the JPG keep the photo’s location and camera data?

No. The JPG is written from the image’s pixels alone, so EXIF details such as the camera model, the date taken and GPS location are not copied over. That makes the converted file safer to share, but keep your original if you need that information.

Is my AVIF uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser: your AVIF is opened, turned into a JPG and saved on your own device. Nothing is sent anywhere, and nothing is kept once you close the tab.

Each one opens the same converter with its format already chosen, plus a guide to both formats.
