Free HEIC to JPG Converter Online

Since iOS 11, iPhones have saved photos as HEIC by default. It halves storage use in many cases, but moving those photos to a Windows PC, an Android phone or an online form often ends in an error.

JPG is the fix. This converter decodes your HEIC on your device, using Safari's built-in support or a bundled decoder in other browsers, then saves a standard JPG at full resolution. No photo ever leaves your device.

HEIC vs JPG

What is HEIC?

High Efficiency Image Container

.heic, .heif

HEIC is a HEIF file whose pictures are compressed with HEVC (H.265), the same codec used for a lot of modern video. Apple made it the default camera format on iPhone and iPad with iOS 11 in 2017, under the setting called High Efficiency.

A HEIC photo is typically much smaller than the same photo as a JPG, which saves a lot of phone storage. But most browsers can't display it, Windows needs an extra extension to open it, and many websites refuse it as an upload.

What is JPG?

Joint Photographic Experts Group

.jpg, .jpeg

JPG, also written JPEG, has been the standard format for photos since the early 1990s. It uses lossy compression: it discards detail the eye is least likely to notice, which keeps photos small.

It is accepted almost everywhere, from cameras and phones to printers, email, websites and government upload forms. It has no transparency, and each time a JPG is edited and saved again it loses a little more detail.

Why Convert HEIC to JPG?

Open photos on Windows

Windows can't open HEIC without extra extensions, and many programs can't open it at all. JPG opens with a double-click.

Upload without errors

Job applications, exam and visa portals, marketplaces and many social sites only take JPG or PNG. HEIC gets rejected.

Share with anyone

Android users, older devices and email recipients can all view a JPG, with no apps or plugins needed.

Print and edit easily

Print services and photo editors all accept JPG, so the photo is ready for whatever comes next.

Tips for Converting HEIC to JPG

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows?

Open this page in any browser, such as Chrome or Edge, and drop the HEIC file onto the converter. The page loads a HEIC decoder that runs on your computer, converts the photo and lets you download the JPG. Nothing needs installing.

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

JPG is lossy, so a small amount of detail is lost, but at the default 90% quality it's very hard to see. The resolution stays the same. Raise the quality slider if you want to keep even more detail.

Why is the JPG bigger than the HEIC?

HEIC uses newer, more efficient compression, so the same photo takes less space. A JPG of similar quality is often noticeably larger. Lower the quality slider if size matters.

What happens to Live Photos and HDR?

A Live Photo converts as a still image, from its main photo. HDR photos are converted to standard color, so the brightest highlights may look a little flatter than on your iPhone's screen.

Does the JPG keep the photo’s location and camera data?

No. The JPG is written from the image’s pixels alone, so EXIF details such as the camera model, the date taken and GPS location are not copied over. That makes the converted file safer to share, but keep your original if you need that information.

Is my HEIC uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser: your HEIC is opened, turned into a JPG and saved on your own device. Nothing is sent anywhere, and nothing is kept once you close the tab.

Each one opens the same converter with its format already chosen, plus a guide to both formats.
