HEIC is great for your phone's storage but awkward everywhere else. Most browsers can't show it, and blogs, online stores and website builders usually refuse HEIC uploads.

WebP keeps much of HEIC's size advantage while working in every current browser. This converter decodes the HEIC on your device, using Safari's built-in support or a bundled decoder in other browsers, and saves a WebP at the same resolution.

How it works

How to Convert HEIC to WebP

  1. 1. Add your HEIC

Drop your .heic photo onto the converter or choose it from your device. On an iPhone, pick it from Files or Photos.

  2. 2. Check the WebP settings

WebP is already selected. Adjust the quality slider if you need a smaller file or more detail.

  3. 3. Download your WebP

Compare the preview and the new file size, then download your WebP.

HEIC vs WebP

What is HEIC?

High Efficiency Image Container

.heic, .heif

HEIC is a HEIF file whose pictures are compressed with HEVC (H.265), the same codec used for a lot of modern video. Apple made it the default camera format on iPhone and iPad with iOS 11 in 2017, under the setting called High Efficiency.

A HEIC photo is typically much smaller than the same photo as a JPG, which saves a lot of phone storage. But most browsers can't display it, Windows needs an extra extension to open it, and many websites refuse it as an upload.

What is WebP?

Google's image format for the web

.webp

WebP was released by Google in 2010 to make images on the web smaller. It has a lossy mode based on the VP8 video codec and a lossless mode, and both support transparency.

For a photo, a WebP is usually smaller than a JPG of similar quality, and every current browser displays it. Outside the browser support is patchier: some older editors, print services and upload forms still don't accept it.

Why Convert HEIC to WebP?

Displays in every browser

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all show WebP, while HEIC displays in almost none of them outside Safari.

Ready for your website

WordPress, Shopify and most site builders accept WebP uploads, and WebP is designed to load quickly on web pages.

Smaller than JPG

If a JPG would be too heavy, WebP usually gives you a smaller file at similar visible quality.

Safer to share

The converted file doesn't carry your photo's GPS location or camera details, which is useful before posting it publicly.

Tips for Converting HEIC to WebP

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert HEIC to WebP on Windows or Android?

Yes. Browsers other than Safari can't read HEIC themselves, so the converter loads a HEIC decoder into the page the first time you open one. It runs on your device, so it works on Windows, Android, Linux and ChromeOS without installing anything.

Will my photo lose quality as a WebP?

Slightly, because WebP is saved lossy. At the default 85% the difference is very hard to see. Move the slider towards 100% if you want to keep more detail.

What happens to Live Photos and HDR?

A Live Photo converts as a still image, from its main photo. HDR photos are converted to standard color, so very bright highlights may look a little less punchy than on your iPhone.

Why won't my HEIC file open?

Some HEIC variants, and damaged files, can't be read. If a photo fails, try exporting it again from the Photos app, or set your iPhone to share as JPG under Settings, Camera, Formats, Most Compatible.

Does the WebP keep the photo’s location and camera data?

No. The WebP is written from the image’s pixels alone, so EXIF details such as the camera model, the date taken and GPS location are not copied over. That makes the converted file safer to share, but keep your original if you need that information.

Is my HEIC uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser: your HEIC is opened, turned into a WebP and saved on your own device. Nothing is sent anywhere, and nothing is kept once you close the tab.

Each one opens the same converter with its format already chosen, plus a guide to both formats.
