A JFIF file is really a JPEG with an unusual extension, often produced when Windows saves an image from a web browser. The picture is fine, but software and upload forms that go by the file name may refuse it.

Converting to PNG gives you a universally accepted file that is lossless from here on. The converter decodes the JFIF in your browser and writes every pixel into a PNG at the same size, with no further compression loss.

JFIF vs PNG

What is JFIF?

JPEG File Interchange Format

.jfif, .jfi, .jif

JFIF is the standard, published in 1992, that describes how JPEG-compressed image data is packed into a file. Most ordinary .jpg files follow it internally, so a .jfif file is a JPEG in everything but name.

The extension usually appears because Windows saved an image from a browser with .jfif instead of .jpg. The picture inside is fine, but some upload forms and apps only check the extension and reject the file.

What is PNG?

Portable Network Graphics

.png

PNG was created in 1996 as an open replacement for GIF. It is lossless: every pixel is stored exactly, so saving a PNG again never wears the image down.

It supports full transparency, including soft, partly see-through edges, which makes it the usual choice for logos, icons, screenshots and cut-out product images. The trade-off is size: a photo saved as PNG is several times larger than the same photo as a JPG.

Why Convert JFIF to PNG?

Stop the quality loss

Every time a JPEG is edited and saved, it's compressed again. As a PNG, further edits are saved without any additional loss.

Crisper text and graphics

If the image is a screenshot, chart or diagram you'll keep editing, PNG keeps sharp edges and small text clean from here on.

Fix rejected uploads

Forms that reject .jfif accept PNG, and so do editors and design tools that don't recognize the JFIF extension.

A clean base for design work

PNG is the standard hand-off format for presentations, documents and design tools, and it supports transparency if you add it later.

Tips for Converting JFIF to PNG

Frequently asked questions

What is a JFIF file?

JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format. It's a standard way of storing JPEG image data, and most .jpg files use it internally. A .jfif file is simply a JPEG with a different extension, often created when Windows saves an image from a browser.

Does converting JFIF to PNG improve quality?

No. Any detail the JPEG compression removed is gone. What PNG does is prevent further loss: the image looks exactly as it does now, and it stays that way no matter how many times you edit and save it.

Why is the PNG so much larger than the JFIF?

JPEG discards detail to keep files small, while PNG stores every pixel losslessly. For photos, that often makes the PNG several times larger. If size matters, convert to JPG or WebP instead.

Can I get a transparent background?

A JFIF can't contain transparency, so the PNG starts fully opaque. PNG does support transparency, though, so you can remove the background in an editor afterwards and save it without losing quality.

Does the PNG keep the photo’s location and camera data?

No. The PNG is written from the image’s pixels alone, so EXIF details such as the camera model, the date taken and GPS location are not copied over. That makes the converted file safer to share, but keep your original if you need that information.

Is my JFIF uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser: your JFIF is opened, turned into a PNG and saved on your own device. Nothing is sent anywhere, and nothing is kept once you close the tab.

Each one opens the same converter with its format already chosen, plus a guide to both formats.
