Most websites now deliver images as WebP, so saving one often leaves you with a file that older software, some design tools and many upload forms don't accept.

PNG is the natural replacement: it's lossless, supports transparency just like WebP, and opens everywhere. This converter decodes your WebP in your browser and writes every pixel to a PNG at the same size.

How it works

How to Convert WebP to PNG

  1. 1. Add your WebP

Drop your .webp file onto the converter, choose it from your device, or paste it with Ctrl+V or Cmd+V.

  2. 2. Check the PNG settings

PNG is already selected. It's lossless, so there's no quality setting.

  3. 3. Download your PNG

Compare the preview and file size with the original, then download your PNG.

WebP vs PNG

What is WebP?

Google's image format for the web

.webp

WebP was released by Google in 2010 to make images on the web smaller. It has a lossy mode based on the VP8 video codec and a lossless mode, and both support transparency.

For a photo, a WebP is usually smaller than a JPG of similar quality, and every current browser displays it. Outside the browser support is patchier: some older editors, print services and upload forms still don't accept it.

What is PNG?

Portable Network Graphics

.png

PNG was created in 1996 as an open replacement for GIF. It is lossless: every pixel is stored exactly, so saving a PNG again never wears the image down.

It supports full transparency, including soft, partly see-through edges, which makes it the usual choice for logos, icons, screenshots and cut-out product images. The trade-off is size: a photo saved as PNG is several times larger than the same photo as a JPG.

Why Convert WebP to PNG?

Work with any software

Some image editors, office apps and older systems still can't open WebP. PNG works in all of them.

Keep transparent backgrounds

Unlike converting to JPG, nothing is flattened. Transparent logos and cut-outs stay transparent.

Edit without losing more

PNG is lossless, so you can edit and re-save the image as often as you like without it degrading further.

Better for text and graphics

Screenshots, diagrams and icons stay crisp as PNG, with no new compression blur around edges and letters.

Tips for Converting WebP to PNG

Frequently asked questions

Does WebP to PNG keep transparency?

Yes. PNG supports full transparency, including partly see-through edges, so the image looks exactly as it did as a WebP.

Does converting WebP to PNG lose quality?

No new quality is lost, because PNG is lossless. The PNG shows exactly what's in the WebP. It can't restore detail the WebP's own compression removed, though.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the WebP?

WebP compresses images, often discarding detail you can't see, while PNG stores every pixel without loss. For photos, the PNG can be several times larger. Choose JPG if you need a smaller file and don't need transparency.

Can I convert an animated WebP?

Only as a still image. The converter uses the first frame, and the PNG it creates isn't animated.

Is my WebP uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser: your WebP is opened, turned into a PNG and saved on your own device. Nothing is sent anywhere, and nothing is kept once you close the tab.

Each one opens the same converter with its format already chosen, plus a guide to both formats.
