Free WebP to GIF Converter Online

WebP is what most sites serve now, so a saved image often arrives as a .webp. Some places still won't take it: older forums, a few email tools, chat platforms that only list GIF in their upload rules.

This converter opens your WebP in the browser, reduces it to a 256-color palette and writes a GIF at the same width and height. It makes a still image. If your WebP is animated, you get its first frame, not a moving GIF.

How it works

How to Convert WebP to GIF

  1. 1. Add your WebP

Drop your .webp file onto the converter, choose it from your device, or paste it with Ctrl+V or Cmd+V.

  2. 2. Check the GIF settings

GIF is already selected. There's no quality slider, because GIF always uses a 256-color palette.

  3. 3. Download your GIF

Check the preview and the file size, then download your GIF.

WebP vs GIF

What is WebP?

Google's image format for the web

.webp

WebP was released by Google in 2010 to make images on the web smaller. It has a lossy mode based on the VP8 video codec and a lossless mode, and both support transparency.

For a photo, a WebP is usually smaller than a JPG of similar quality, and every current browser displays it. Outside the browser support is patchier: some older editors, print services and upload forms still don't accept it.

What is GIF?

Graphics Interchange Format

.gif

GIF was created by CompuServe in 1987 and is one of the oldest image formats still in everyday use. It stores up to 256 colors per image and compresses without losing detail inside that palette.

It's best known for short looping animations, but a GIF can also be a single still image. Transparency is all-or-nothing: each pixel is either clear or solid, with no soft edges. GIF opens almost everywhere, which is why many forums and chat tools still ask for it.

Why Convert WebP to GIF?

Meet a GIF-only requirement

Some forums, avatar uploaders and chat tools list GIF, JPG and PNG and nothing else. A .webp gets rejected, a .gif goes through.

Share it anywhere

GIF has been readable on practically every device since the late 1980s, so the person on the other end can open it without thinking about formats.

Keep a see-through background

Unlike JPG, GIF can hold transparency. A sticker or logo with a clear background keeps it, as long as its edges are hard rather than feathered.

Use flat artwork in older tools

Icons, pixel art, diagrams and simple logos have few colors, so they survive the 256-color limit with little or no visible change.

Tips for Converting WebP to GIF

Frequently asked questions

Does this make an animated GIF from my WebP?

No. The GIF is a still image. If your WebP is animated, the converter uses its first frame and the result doesn't move. It's built for static images that need to end up as a .gif file.

Does WebP to GIF keep transparency?

Yes, with one limit. GIF has no partial transparency, so each pixel ends up fully clear or fully solid. Soft edges and drop shadows come out hard-edged, and a pale halo can appear around a cut-out placed on a different background.

Why does my GIF look worse than the WebP?

GIF can show only 256 colors in one image, while WebP can hold millions. Photos and gradients get squeezed into that palette, which shows as banding or a slightly grainy look. Flat graphics, logos and icons barely change.

Why is the GIF bigger than the WebP?

WebP is a newer format with much stronger compression. Google's own comparison found animated WebP files 19% to 64% smaller than the same GIFs, and a still photo shows the same gap. If size matters more than the format, keep the WebP or choose JPG.

Which format should I pick: GIF, PNG or JPG?

Use GIF only when a site or app specifically asks for it. For a photo, JPG is smaller and smoother. For graphics with soft transparency, PNG keeps every pixel as it is.

Does the GIF keep the photo’s location and camera data?

No. The GIF is written from the image’s pixels alone, so EXIF details such as the camera model, the date taken and GPS location are not copied over. That makes the converted file safer to share, but keep your original if you need that information.

Is my WebP uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser: your WebP is opened, turned into a GIF and saved on your own device. Nothing is sent anywhere, and nothing is kept once you close the tab.

Each one opens the same converter with its format already chosen, plus a guide to both formats.
